In 2016, Jennifer Uchendu-Kalu was 24 and passionate about sustainability. She wanted to contribute to Nigeria's environmental future, but there were no doors open to her. So she built her own: a WordPress blog called SustyVibes, where she wrote about sustainability in a language young Nigerians could actually connect with.
A few months in, she invited her readers to a Susty Party in Lagos. Over 50 young people showed up. That room said everything. Young Nigerians didn't just care about the environment - they wanted to do something about it. SustyVibes would give them the space to do exactly that. And they ran with it. Young people, who we call SustyVibers, didn't just participate. They led. They designed and ran projects and campaigns on the sustainability issues they actually cared about, in the places they lived. More young people with the same passion found us online, and a community began to take shape.
A decade later, we are over 800 SustyVibers strong, with roots in Nigeria and branches stretching across West Africa, the UK, and the US. As we step into our 10th year, we are not just celebrating how far we have come. We are reimagining what the next decade can look like: for our volunteers, our communities, and the continent we serve.
Africa has the world's largest youth population. Those young people are not just the future of climate action. They are the present. And SustyVibes exists to prove it.
