SheSpoke: The Widowed and The Single Mother

Let's talk about the treatment of single mothers and widows in this part of the world.

Na she kill her husband oh!

She wants to chop all the money he made and not share with his family

Why did she marry an older man? see na ... shebi e don die

Na money she wan chop

Family of the Husband:

We are sorry but you killed our son. we can’t help you

and yes just so you know because you don’t have a male son - we are taking all the property
What’s our own? No be you no wan work before?

No we are not giving you any of our son’s money or businesses

No we are not giving you any of our son’s money or businesses

No we are not giving you any of our son’s money or businesses

We don’t know you any longer

Single Mother/ Young Mother

Just dey open leg anyhow, see all these small girls that lack home training

Even if na rape, what was she wearing that day? na lie jor!! Na she cos am

See when they say marry before children some people will not listen?

I feel sad for her parents sha ....what a disgrace

What they don’t see:

Her struggle to provide for her children

Her starvation for her kids to eat

Her working multiple jobs to be a provider

Her determination to go to school and still raise a child

Her Rambo-ish resurrection

When she makes it out of the ditch that they put her in they begin to

They begin to "famz" her and praise her like Winne the Pooh loves honey.

They are stronger than you would ever know and they need our help

They should not be thrown out

                                                                              They should not be forgotten

Sometimes they need help but they don’t know how to ask

Be there and ready for them when they ask

And most importantly to the families of the widowed; they need support, not insults

To the family of single mums, they need all the support you can give
